November 28, 2001 - Wave7 Optics Announces Their Last Mile Link Optical Access
System
Architecture Goes Beyond Broadband and Enables Cost-Effective Fiber to the Home
and Business
Anaheim, CA, November 28, 2001 — Wave7 Optics, Inc., today announced the
commercial introduction of their high-bandwidth, fiber-deep Last Mile LinkTM (LML)
optical access system. The LML is a revolutionary optical access architecture
that effectively eliminates the current cost and implementation barriers faced
by network operators in deploying Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and
Fiber-to-the-Business (FTTB) solutions.
The Wave7 Optics LML advanced optical access system provides video (CATV and
digital, including IP streaming), high-speed data and telephony services
(IP-based or circuit-based) to subscribers with dedicated and on-demand
symmetrical data rates of up to 500 Mb/sec/subscriber, all on a single fiber.
The Last Mile Link architecture is standards-based, cost-competitive with
current HFC implementations, and includes industry-leading Quality-of-Service (QoS)
mechanisms for enhanced features. The solution overcomes the high fiber counts,
limited distance range and high equipment costs of competing FTTX solutions,
such as passive optical networks (PONs).
“The Last Mile Link is poised to break open the last mile access bottleneck,”
stated Tom Tighe, President and CEO of Wave7 Optics. “Our approach to optical
access was to look beyond broadband to the next generation of optical access.
The Last Mile LinkTM represents a major step forward for optical access, it is
not a PON, and allows operators to leverage their significant existing assets to
provide new revenue generating opportunities. We developed our architecture
giving careful consideration to practical deployment issues while targeting cost
parity with advanced HFC networks. The Last Mile Link advanced architecture
allows the network operator to offer service level agreements on a per
subscriber basis and to incrementally bill on differentiated service offerings,
simultaneously providing service to business and residential subscribers. The
Last Mile Link makes fiber to the home and fiber to the business a reality
today.”
The Last Mile Link system is comprised of several network elements including the
Last Mile CoreTM, Last Mile TapTM, and Last Mile GatewayTM series. The Last Mile
Core (LMC) is the point of bandwidth management and optical regeneration
enabling hub to subscriber distances of over 70km. The Last Mile Tap is a
craft-friendly, re-enterable drop access closure for passive optical splitting
and field splicing of up to eight drop cables. The Last Mile Gateway series of
products are customer premise devices providing a full range of broadband
services including high-speed data, POTS, T1, CATV, digital cable, and IP video.
The Last Mile SentinelTM element management system allows easy configuration and
management of the Last Mile Link including bandwidth management parameters and
subscriber service level agreements.
About Wave7 Optics
Wave7 Optics, Inc., a privately held company headquartered in Alpharetta,
Georgia, is a technology developer dedicated to the creation of a
fiber-to-the-home and -business (FTTX) optical access system for video,
high-speed data and telephony signals that resolves the “last mile” bandwidth
dilemma. The Wave7 Optics network architecture effectively overcomes traditional
cost and implementation barriers to FTTX-based solutions using a combination of
innovative technology and creative applications of existing technologies.
