Press Release

December 5, 2002 - Wave7 Optics Introduces Set-Top RF Return in the Last Mile Link

Wave7 Optics Delivers the Industry’s Only Fiber Access Connectivity to Traditional RF-only STTs

ALPHARETTA, GA, December 5, 2002: Wave7 Optics, Inc., a leading innovator in optical access, is pleased to introduce the Last Mile Subscriber ReturnTM (LMSR) Headend product. The LMSR enables Operators to connect Wave7’s Last Mile LinkTM single fiber optical access solution to traditional Set-Top Terminals (STT) at the home.

Wave7’s revolutionary, standards-based LMSR works in conjunction with Wave7’s family of Last Mile GatewayTM (LMG) customer premise products to transport traditional RF Return signaling from the home to the Headend using Wave7’s single fiber access system. This enables residential customers to have access to interactive services like Pay-Per-View (PPV) and Video-On-Demand (VOD) without the need of a separate cable plant, telephone return, or an upgrade to an IP STT.

Jim Farmer, Wave7’s Chief Technical Officer believes it is a break-through. “Our LMSR technology allows seamless upgrade of an HFC plant to a next-generation FTTx plant, since Service Providers do not have to bear the cost of end-user transition to newer, more expensive IP set-tops and a new headend control system. Moreover, in a new-build scenario this technology alleviates the need for deploying a completely separate network, whether copper or cable, just to transport a very low data rate signal upstream. This also means that service providers can use the existing coax wiring in each subscriber’s home instead of having to install twisted-pair telephone wiring to the back of every TV set like all of our Passive Optical Network (PON) competitors require.”

“Wave7 Optics Last Mile LinkTM Access System is truly unique in that it supports a variety of subscriber terminal technologies, our patent-pending RF Return technology is today’s most economical and practical approach to solving the long-standing optical access quandary of providing an upstream RF Return path on the same network as voice, video, and data,” added Emmanuel Vella, Wave7 Optics Chief Marketing Officer. “Wave7 Optics has extended ‘triple-play’ to not only include Voice, Data, and Broadcast analog/digital video but also Set-Top Return over a single fiber making it practical and economical to deploy fiber extensions in new build areas off of existing HFC networks.”

About Wave7 Optics
Wave7 Optics, Inc. is a market leader in the fiber-to-the-home and business (FTTX) optical access market. The Last Mile Link™ optical access system effectively overcomes traditional cost and implementation barriers to the bandwidth capacity bottleneck in the last mile of communications networks. The Last Mile Link architecture is standards-based, cost-competitive with current HFC implementations, and includes industry-leading Quality-of-Service (QoS) mechanisms for enhanced features. The solution overcomes the high fiber counts, limited distance range and high equipment costs of competing FTTX solutions, such as passive optical networks (PONs). The Last Mile Link product suite provides solutions that specifically address residential, business and multi-tenant customers with a unifying architecture providing a complete triple play of voice, video, and data services.
