Press Release

September 27, 2004 - Wave7 Optics Asserts Industry Leadership in Set Top Box Compatibility For Two-Way Interactive Services in FTTP Networks

Atlanta, Ga. – September 27, 2004 – Wave7 Optics today announced that recent compatibility testing confirms that operators deploying the “Last Mile Link” FTTP (fiber to the premises) system may deploy any digital RF set top box they wish. RF return technology is fundamental to two-way communications involving digital set-top boxes, upon which services such as video-on-demand and interactive shopping or gaming depend. Furthermore, set top box compatibility is of crucial importance to all network operators deploying triple play FTTP networks, as an overwhelming majority of them continue to implement RF video based services.

“By demonstrating the ability to support both of the interactive return interfaces, Wave7 continues to lead all vendors of FTTP systems with regards to innovation in video capabilities,” said Jim Farmer, CTO of Wave7 Optics. “To our knowledge, no other FTTP vendors have the demonstrated capability to support both RF return standards with a single fiber to the home. Wave7 also supports digital IP delivery of video and has completed interoperation tests with most of the popular IPTV equipment on the market.”

Wave7 Optics was the first to deploy RF return technology commercially in mid-2003, when it started shipping RF return-enabled “Last Mile Gateway” customer premises devices compatible with Motorola digital set top boxes using the SCTE 55-1 standard. Wave7 Optics has several patents pending concerning the technology used in this application. Today’s announcement concerns the other interface standard, known as SCTE 55-2, which is deployed by Scientific-Atlanta and its licensees.

Wave7 Optics completed the testing in cooperation with Itaas, an independent testing lab in the Atlanta area, using a Scientific-Atlanta Single Wire Return Device (SWRD).

Wave7 Optics is exhibiting the complete LML product line next week in Orlando at the FTTH Council Conference, October 4 – 6, in the Caribe Royale Hotel and Convention Center (booth 706).
