October 1, 2007 - Wave7 Optics Teams with Telindus SAU and Cisco Spain to Build new FTTP Network for the Servei de Telecommunications d’Andorra. Network to Deliver Full “Triple Play” Services to More than 45,000 Homes and Business Customers Throughout the Principality.
ORLANDO –October 1, 2007 - Wave7 Optics, a leading supplier of fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) equipment for residential and business services, today announced here at the Fiber-to-the-Home Council’s Conference and Expo that Servei de Telecommunications d’Andorra (STA) has selected Wave7 Optics, Telindus SAU and Cisco Spain to construct a new Next Generation Network (NGN) FTTP network, using Wave7’s Trident7™ Universal Access Platform in the access network and Cisco 7600 Series Routers in the aggregation network.
STA expects to inaugurate service throughout the capital of Andorra La Vella in Q1 2008 and achieve principality-wide coverage by Q2 2009. The project is a complete overbuild of the existing copper network, which will be retired as service activation on the NGN occurs. Andorra is located in the Eastern Pyrenees region, sharing borders with both France and Spain.
Wave7 Optics will provide FTTP electronics for the project while Cisco will provide carrier Ethernet equipment for core and edge aggregation. Telindus is responsible for turnkey system integration for the entire project, including the IP Video and Voice solutions, in addition to the Wave7 Optics and Cisco equipment.
STA is deploying the Trident7 OLT configured for the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) GE-PON standard. Trident7 is the industry’s only FTTP platform capable of delivering standards-based IEEE GE-PON and ITU GPON technologies from a common platform. The Trident7 is further differentiated by its ability to support both PON and active Ethernet deployments. A typical residential service package for STA will provide IP video, voice and data services, while a business services package will include symmetric and guaranteed data services of up to 1 Gbps. The Cisco carrier Ethernet solution was chosen for its performance as well as its flexibility because it is agnostic with respect to the network access technology used.
“We found the proposal by Telindus, Cisco and Wave7 met all of our criteria for immediate and future service requirements in a cost-effective manner,” said Jaume Salvat, Director General and CEO of STA. “The deployment of this network will put Andorra at the forefront of telecommunications infrastructure and services in Western Europe, allowing a huge transport capacity and optimized fiber infrastructure to better fit our customer expectations.”
Furthermore, should the case arise, the chosen network solution allows multiple service providers and network operators to deliver a variety of services, without interfering with one another, while utilizing standard interfaces. Each service provider retains individual control of user Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA), as well as Quality of Service (QoS) and bandwidth management. The Trident7 solution also allows delivery of services to each operator’s own end-user equipment.
"We are very excited to be chosen for this unique opportunity,” said Thomas Tighe, President and CEO of Wave7 Optics. “This is really the first broadly based deployment of a FTTP solution by a European PTT and we are thrilled to be part of it. An advanced feature set, ease of operation and network scalability make the Trident7 an excellent choice for STA’s requirements.”
Wave7 Optics is exhibiting the complete Trident7 product line at the 2007 FTTH Council Conference & Expo at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort, September 30 – October 4, in Booth 213. In addition, Wave7 Optics’ CTO, Jim Farmer, is giving a presentation, “Everything You Need to Know about Video,” on Tuesday, October 2nd 10:15 – 11:00 AM, in Salon V.
